Private Health Insurance

When selecting a private health insurance policy you need to consider several factors such as whether hospitalization and visits to specialists are covered. Some insurers have tie-ups with healthcare providers who offer services at reduced costs to policyholders.

Various Types of Private Health Insurance Plans

The various types of private health insurance plans are:
  • Health Management Organization (HMO): It is a health plan that covers preventative, emergency and long term medical care. HMO plans are one of the more affordable plans for individuals and offer various types of coverage. They provide you an option to choose from various co-pay and prescription plans.
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): Although similar to the HMO plan, the PPO plan is more expensive. This plan is also more restricting in terms of the place from where you can receive healthcare. However, you can greatly reduce your monthly premiums through this plan by adjusting your deductible or co-pay amounts.
  • Point of Service (POS): Unlike the HMO plan, POS does not need a referral to treat a condition requiring specialized care. This plan also allows you the liberty to select a doctor or a facility that is not in the plan.
  • Fee-For-Service or indemnity policy: A fee for service plan has an annual deductible that must be met before the insurance pays. This plan also enables you to use any doctor or medical facility.

Things to Consider while Seeking a Cost-Effective Private Health Insurance Plan

The following points must be considered while seeking a high-quality, yet affordable private health insurance plan:
  • Type of coverage needed: Are you looking for a plan to cover just yourself or do you need coverage for you and your family?
  • Health needs: Are you and other people in your plan in good health? Do you have any preexisting conditions that need to be considered? Does anyone have special medical needs or will they require treatment by certain medical specialists or in particular medical institutions?
  • How much coverage is needed: Opting for only the requisite coverage amount will help you obtain the best possible premium rate from insurers.
  • Shop for health insurance quotes: Always get quotes from more than one private medical insurance company before making a final decision on your private medical plan. However, do not base your decision entirely on the cheapest quote.
  • Flexibility: While some private medical plans allow you to select from their pool of treatment providers, others give you complete freedom to choose your doctor and hospital. Weigh this issue while selecting a policy.
