If you develop an eye disease or if you injure your eye it is likely that your regular health insurance will be able to pay for your diagnosis and subsequent treatment but it is not likely to pay for other types of vision necessities. For example it will not pay for routine eye examinations, eyeglasses or contact lenses. That is why you need special insurance for your vision care needs.
If you work for a large company and have group health insurance coverage through your employer then it is possible that vision health insurance may be a part of it. Unfortunately it is only the minority of companies that include vision needs with their health insurance coverage. According to the United States Department of Labor, there are less than 30 percent of workers who have coverage for their vision.
Vision care insurance most often pays for certain basic services such as an annual eye exam (which includes a refraction to check the status of your vision), eyeglass lenses and eyeglass frames. It also includes contact lenses. As well LASIK and PRK vision correction procedures are covered but at a rate that is discounted. Be aware that your vision health insurance plan may impose a limit on services such as getting new frames and lenses. It is common for the limit to be for every two years (or thereabouts).
If you are not able to get vision insurance through your job then you may be able to get it through other means. Local business groups are an option as are religious groups, fraternal organizations and college alumni associations. If you are 65 years of age or older and are a part of the Medicare Advantage Plan then you may qualify for a vision care benefit to purchase a pair of eyeglasses.
You can also buy insurance for your eyes through a private company. Ask others for referrals or take some time to do some searching on your own. Once you have compiled a list of companies that are of interest to you then you need to compare and contrast each one and figure out which has the best deal for you. You have only one pair of eyes and they deserve the best vision health insurance you can find.
