The EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee meet with financial experts and the Commissioners Barnier and Joaquin Almunia to discuss ways to fight market manipulation following the Libor/Eurobor scandal.

The Special Committee on Organised Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering will discuss how to fight corruption and fraud that harm the financial interests of the EU and what measures to take to pervert the misuse of EU funds.

Over 1,300 participants from civil society, universities, businesses and governments will take up the question of whether multilateralism is in crisis at the World Trade Organisation’s annual Public Forum from 24 to 26 September.

Quartet of Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia debate Syria at meeting in New York.

The UNCTAD Trade and Development Board holds a high-level session debating the evolution of the international trading system and its trends from a development perspective. Keynote speakers include Pascal Lamy, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

The United Nations general assembly opens in New York this week with US President Barack Obama headlining the opening address.  

Wednesday, September 26

South American – Arab countries business summit takes place in Peru for 3 days. Organisers say the summit will be a platform towards greater policy coordination and a ‘golden opportunity’ for countries in both regions to work towards sustainable development.

Thursday, September 27

China and Japan mark the 40th anniversary of normalisation of bilateral ties. However, China has postponed all commemorative events amid rising tensions over the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands.

The European Ombudsman, Nikiforos Diamandouros, in cooperation with the Complaints Mechanism of the European Investment Bank is organising the seminar “Transparency and Accountability in International Development Banks” in the framework of the International Right to Know Day. The International Right to Know Day was established in 2003 by access to information advocates from around the world.
