Government expenditure have been growing every year. In 2010, the world's total general government expenditure reached US$20.638 trillion, almost double that of the 2005's total of US$10.382 trillion

By the end of 2011, the world's general government total expenditure will hit US$23.995 trillion, despite a bout of austerity measures across Europe and The US.

Interestingly to note, western economies are more likely to have a higher general government total expenditure as a percentage of their GDP.
