Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD)


 


The Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC), which was meant for coordinating the Marshall Plan for reconstructing Europe after World War II, was renamed to Organization for economic cooperation and development (OECD) on September 30, 1961. Since then the organization has tried to achieve higher economic growth, improving standard of living and maintaining financial stability.


OECD Committees:

The OECD has representatives from its thirty member countries. The member countries exchange ideas in the areas of trade and commerce, science and technology, employment opportunities and overall market condition. Presently there are around 200 committees, working groups and expert groups in all.

Each year in the OECD annual meeting around 40,000 officials join in the meeting.

OECD Secretariat

Around 2000 staffs in the OECD secretariat in Paris are to support the works done by the committee. They are 700 economists, lawyers, scientists and professionals. The Secretary General heads the secretariat. Presently the OECD functions in its two official languages such as English and French. All the staff members of the OECD are the citizens of the all member countries. The staff members come through a process of national representation.

OECD Funding System

The OECD is totally funded by its member countries. Member countries make contribution according to their sizes. The largest contributors are United States and Japan.

As to the statistics, the total size of the OECD budget is around 330 million euros a year.

Functions Of OECD

The OECD deals with data collection and analysis, makes collective discussion on various policies and involves in decision-making. It specially analyses on the role of information technology on economic growth. It works on the international trade issues and international trade negotiations.
