There are several ways in which the media houses of the United States of America generate their revenue – through advertisements, selling of material whose copyright is owned by them and subscriptions. It has been observed over the years that major names in US media industry have been household names all over the world.
Television Industry
The television is one of the major parts of media industry of USA. The major names in the United States television industry are National Broadcasting Company, The CW Television Network, American Broadcasting Company, MyNetworkTV, CBS Broadcasting Inc., ION Television and Fox Broadcasting Company. These are broadcast networks and function on a commercial basis. There is also the Public Broadcasting Service. It is a public television network, which is non-commercial in nature and is sponsored in parts by the Federal Government of the USA. There are a few Spanish language terrestrial networks as well – Univision, Telefutura and Telemundo. There are certain other channels that have to be subscribed for – HBO and CNN.
Radio Industry
Radio industry is an important part of US media industry as well. US radio industry may be distinguished into talk radio, which is political in nature, and music radio. The speciality of the US music radio is that these are primarily devoted to any one form of music. The public radio network of the USA is known as National Public Radio. However, most of the radio stations are profit making companies. The newest form of radio that is emerging in popularity is the satellite radio and the major names in this context are XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio.
Film Industry
The film industry of USA is known all over the world for the high quality of films that are made by them every year. The leading actors and directors as well as technicians from all over the world have been the part of the US film industry, which is also known as Hollywood.
Print Media Industry
The print media is an important part of the US media industry. As far as the newspapers are concerned, major newspapers of USA are Wall Street Journal, which is more business oriented and New York Times, which is liberal in its reporting. There are also news agencies like Reuters and Associated Press, which are highly reputed for quality and range of reporting.
There are various magazines in the United States of America that cover almost all subjects under the sun. News magazines are among the leading magazines available in USA and leading names in this regard are TIME, U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek . There are certain magazines that are brought out by organizations that function on a professional basis. The publications of these organizations are meant only for their members. Two examples of such magazines would be ABA Journal, which is intended for lawyers and Communications of the ACM, which is meant for the specialists in computer science. The Internet industry is one of the booming media related industries in the USA. There are a number of websites on any and all subjects and issues.
