The United Kingdom will host its global artificial intelligence summit in November. The summit will happen at Bletchley Park, which previously served as a hub for Britain’s World War Two code breakers in November.
UK to host world’s first AI summit
The event will be hosted in Britain as the UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, placed Britain in a position to emerge as a global leader in protecting the safety of the fast-growing AI technology. The AI space rose to prominence following the launch of the ChatGPT chatbot by OpenAI.
The AI summit will occur between November 1 and November 2. As aforementioned, it will be hosted at Bletchley Park. The latter is a location in Milton Keynes where Alan Turing, a renowned mathematician, figured out the Enigma code by Nazi Germany.
Executives across the technological industry, government officials, and academic professionals will participate in this summit. These individuals will discuss the risks within the AI industry and discuss how these risks can be mitigated to lower the impact on the affected parties.
This summit will discuss a wide range of issues, including how to prevent AI from being used in spreading misinformation during crucial periods such as elections. The summit will also address how technology can be used in warfare and other areas that can deliver the most benefits.
UK positions itself as a technological hub
Sunak has also said that the UK has long been a hub for transformative technologies with potential to impact the future. As such, the country was best suited to host the first global AI safety summit ever. The summit will take place at Bletchley Park.
“The UK has long been home to the transformative technologies of the future, so there is no better place to host the first-ever global AI safety summit than at Bletchley Park. To fully embrace the extraordinary opportunities of artificial intelligence, we must grip and tackle the risks to ensure it develops safely in the years ahead,” Sunak said.
In June, Sunak had said that Britain would set up a summit after meeting with the US President Joe Biden. At the time, Sunak said he intended for Britain to emerge as an intellectual and geographical hub for AI regulation.
Governments globally are currently assessing how they can address the adverse effects of AI technology without inhibiting innovation. The summit will be led by tech entrepreneurs who will establish AI’s role in the modern world.
Britain is setting up a robust regulatory framework for AI. The country will split the regulatory role for AI between the two regulatory entities tasked with oversight of competition, human rights, health, and safety.
The growth of the AI industry has attracted the attention of the Group of Seven (G7) economies: Britain, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. In May, these countries advocated for creating standards that promote a trustworthy AI ecosystem.
