Santander Bank, or Banco Santander SA, is a bank holding company and the largest and most profitable subsidiary of Grupo Santander (NYSE: STD). Banco Santander operates principally from Spain, and serves the UK, Portugal, the Eurozone, the US and the Latin American countries. Banco Santander operates in three principal operating segments:
· Continental Europe covers all retail banking, asset management, insurance services and wholesale banking in all parts of Europe except the UK. It also includes the units, such as the Santander Branch Network, Banco Espanol de Credito, Santander Consumer Finance and Portugal.
· The UK business segment includes retail and wholesale banking, asset management and insurance conducted by the various units and branches of the bank in the UK.
· The Latin America business segment includes activities conducted via subsidiary banks and other subsidiaries in Latin America.
Banco Santander was founded in 1857 and has a successful track record in retail and commercial banking. The bank has also grown to become one of the five largest banks in the world by profit. With more than 150 years of excellent financial services in Europe and worldwide, Banco Santander has won many awards in providing banking excellence and has also been named as one of the top ten safest banks by the Global Finance magazine. The bank has more than 14,000 branches and 35,000 ATMs globally, more than any other international bank. Banco Santander has more than 80 million customers in over 40 countries and has more than $1.2 trillion in deposits and customer funds under management. The bank also employs more than 180,000 professionals and has more than 3 million shareholders.
In 2004, Banco Santander acquired Abbey National plc, with plans of rebranding it as Santander in January 2010.[br]
Santander Bank: Financial Services
Banco Santander provides various financial services to individuals, corporations and institutions. Some of them are listed here:
· Individual customers: This division of Banco Santander deals with activities like daily banking operations, investment management and mortgages. In Spain, Santander, Banesto, Openbank and Santander Consumer Finance provide financial services for individual customers. In the UK, Abbey manages the vertical and in Portugal and Brazil, the vertical is managed by Santander Totta and Santander. The Santander Private Banking manages this vertical in the rest of the world.
· Companies: This division of Banco Santander deals with equipment financing and investments, foreign trade collections and payments, treasury management and a range of transaction services. In Spain, this vertical is managed by Santander, Banesto and Santander Consumer Finance.
· Private Banking: This division of Banco Santander deals with maximizing ROI, financial and tax planning and investment advisories. In Spain, this vertical is managed by Santander, Banesto and Banif.
