In recent times rates of Rhode Island tax on gasoline and cigarettes have been proposed to be increased. However, these proposals to increase RI tax on gasoline and cigarettes have come in for opposition from a number of owners of convenience stores in that state. They have organized a rally against this proposed rise in cigarette and gasoline tax of Rhode Island.

A spending package worth $7.2 billion has been announced to be contested in votes that would take place at House of Representatives. This proposal, if effective, would mean that cigarette tax in Rhode Island would be increased to $3.46. This would mean an increase of $1 as far as cigarette tax at Rhode Island is concerned.

This would make rate of Rhode Island tax on cigarettes highest in entire United States of America. Legislators, working at state level, are trying to raise rates of Rhode Island tax on gasoline to 33 cents per gallon. At present this rate stands at 31 cents for every gallon.

However, all these Rhode Island tax proposals are being strictly opposed by retailers of these products at that state. They have said that if any taxes are raised or any new taxes are introduced then they would have to terminate services of a number of their employees. This increase in rates of Rhode Island tax on gasoline and cigarettes would also lead to closing of stores that deal in these products.

Sales of other products of these entities such as lottery tickets would also suffer if rates of Rhode Island tax are raised. This would be vital to their existence on short term as these products are crucial to their existence.

They have argued that increase in rates of Rhode Island tax on cigarettes is a bad move as this increase would affect sales of other products that are available in those stores. A number of store owners have already threatened that if Rhode Island tax rates go up they would submit keys of their stores to government and quit. This indeed would be a worrisome situation for Rhode Island in these times of tremendous economic distress.
