The Royal Bank of Scotland: History & Present
The Royal Bank of Scotland plc is the retail banking subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc. Its roots can be traced back to 1727, when it was established in Edinburgh, under a royal charter. Over the years it has carried out a number of mergers and acquisitions, including the acquisition of the National Westminster Bank, in 2000. It was bailed out by the British government in 2008 during the Financial Crisis. Currently, RBS has a network of 700 branches, which are mainly located in Scotland.
