Piracy

Piracy has become a major problem in the modern world.

Although piracy was a serious challenge in the 16th and 17th centuries, its threat was thought to be contained.

Modern piracy grew into big business in the Straits of Malacca and the Caribbean, affecting both holiday makers (particularly yacht sailors) and merchant ships alike, and occassionally leading to loss of life.

However international accords, co-ordination between coast guards and navies, and improved monitoring facilities have led to much lower levels of piracy.

However the collapse of law and order in Somalia has led to ever more brazen acts of piracy, including the hijacking of oil super tankers and other large ships, for ransoms in the millions of dollars.
