American Express Credit Card Malaysia: Issuer’s History

American Express began as a provider of delivery services in 1850 and started the business of issuing money orders in 1890. In 1922, it ventured into the business of travel services through the issuance of traveler’s checks. American Express launched its credit card business in the 1950’s and issued its first gold card in 1966. In 1984, the American Express Platinum Card was introduced to cater to the elite.

American Express Card

  • One reward point for each RM spent with the card.
  • Free accident insurance on tours of up to RM 250,000.
  • Check cashing facility up to US$ 200.
  • Facility to transfer reward points to the Frequent Flyer program.

American Express Gold Card

  • Free travel insurance against accidents of up to RM 500,000.
  • Check cashing facility of up to US$ 2,000.
  • Protection guarantee from online fraud.
  • Priority Reservation facility to avail preferential booking services at discounted rates.

American Express Platinum Credit Card

  • Earn 10 reward points per RM at various Platinum Partners.
  • Interest free credit period of up to 20 days.
  • Flight travel insurance of up to RM 1000,000 million and flight inconvenience cover up to RM 2,500.
  • Purchase protection to a maximum of RM150,000 per annum.

American Express Platinum Card

  • Issued by invitation only.
  • Roadside assistance in case of breakdown of vehicle.
  • Selection and delivery of gifts.
  • Arranging services of housekeepers, bodyguards, caterers, chauffeurs and gardeners.
  • Commission-free issuance of traveler’s checks.
  • Legal and medical assistance in foreign countries.
  • Free add-on cards.

American Express also offers the co-branded Singapore Airlines Krisflyer Card, which enables one to redeem card usage for Krisflyer Miles.
