Renewable, silent, non-polluting, low maintenance costs, longer lasting – that is enough to build a case for solar power and products.
Solar power has caught the attention of the governments of several countries. For instance, in 2006, the US Department of Energy launched Solar America Initiative with the aim of making solar energy cheaper and more convenient to use.

Given all the benefits of using solar energy and in view of the rising power prices, there is a conscious move towards solar products. Several high energy consuming products can now be run on solar energy. Among these are:
Solar Refrigerator
Typically a refrigerator is one of the highest energy consumers in a home. Solar refrigerators are usually powered by both solar photovoltaic panels as well as conventional electricity as a backup. Companies such as Sun Frost, SunDanzer and SolarChill provide solar refrigerators in the US. While a conventional refrigerator usually consumes approximately 305 amp hours per day, some solar refrigerators may average as low as 53 amp hours per day.
Solar Pool Heating Equipment
The operating costs associated with a gas heated pool of 300-400 square feet may be more than $1,000 per annum. These can be brought down to almost nil by using solar pool heaters. While the initial cost of a solar pool heater may be high, it’s low operating/maintenance costs and energy conservation could result in savings in the longer run.
Solar Powered Lights
Solar powered bulbs do not require an external power source or any wiring. Mostly used in gardens, driveways and outdoor paths, these bulbs typically last for around five hours on a single charge and may not require any maintenance for as many as five years.
Solar Powered Fans
Solar powered attic fans are usually small in size and typically placed on the roof where it can get direct sunlight. Portable solar fans, which can be carried into an RV or a boat, are also available. Solar powered fans can be switched on almost immediate after direct contact with sunlight and can be used for 24 hours a day without adding to power bills.
Other Solar Products
There are some innovative ideas, such as solar ant charmers and solar anti-mosquito guards, that can be charged by sunlight during the day instead of using conventional energy sources.
