As per latest reports on Mississippi tax negotiations regarding cigarette taxes to be imposed in that state have fallen through. As of now it looks like this MS tax would not be imposed after all. Negotiations regarding this Miss. tax were going on between House of Representative and Senate.

As of now it seems that rate of tax of Mississippi on cigarettes would not be increased at least till 2010 fiscal. Last date for arriving at a compromise regarding this tax in Mississippi had been decided to be 26th of March but now possibilities of discussion regarding this tax at Mississippi have almost disappeared.

At present rate of Mississippi excise taxes levied on packs of cigarettes is 18 cents for every packet. This rate is third lowest as far as whole of USA is concerned. House of Representatives have proposed that rate of Mississippi tax on cigarettes should be set at 80 cents for every pack of cigarettes. Previously they had quoted offers of a dollar and 90 cents.

Economists have said that discussions regarding this Mississippi tax could be renewed only if there was a two thirds vote regarding same in both Senate and House of Representatives. However, possibilities of such a thing happening are rare as there are legislators in both houses who are against any increase in taxes of introduction of same.

Dean Kirby who is Chairman of Finance Committee in Senate of Mississippi has said that members of House of Representatives have not agreed to a proposal which had stated that rates of Mississippi tax should be increased two times.

However, Democratic Representative Bobby Moak, who was one of negotiators, has said that talks regarding rates of Mississippi tax on cigarettes could once again resurface. However, these discussions would start only when legislators sit down to discuss state budget.

Leaders in Mississippi Senate had been thinking of cigarette tax as a way to lend some stability to yearly expenses of renewing tags of automobiles. Rates of Mississippi tax have been going up as its financial conditions are deteriorating quickly. It has also decided to introduce deductions in state expenses.
