Central Statistical Organisation has released the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with the base 1993-94 for the month of August 2006.
1. The index stands at 233.5, which is 9.7% higher as compared to the level in the month of August 2005.
2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of August 2006 stand at 138.2, 250.3, and 200.6 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of (-)0.1%, 11.1% and 3.7% as compared to August 2005.
The cumulative growth during April-August, 2006-07 over the corresponding period of 2005-06 in the three sectors have been 3.1%, 11.8% and 5.7% respectively, which moved the overall growth in the General Index at 10.6%.
3. In terms of industries, as many as fourteen (14) out of the seventeen (17) industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-1987) have shown positive growth during the month of August 2006 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
The industry group Machinery and Equipment other than Transport Equipment’ has shown the highest growth of 20.3%, followed by 18.6% in ‘Other Manufacturing Industries’ and 16.4% in ‘Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products’. On the other hand, the industry group ‘Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures’ have shown a negative growth of 14.6% followed by 2.6% in ‘Leather and Leather & Fur Products’ and 2.5% in Paper & Paper Products and Printing, Publishing & Allied Industries’.
4. As per Use-based classification, the Sectoral growth rates in August 2006 over August 2005 are 4.9% in Basic goods, 14.7% in Capital goods and 7.6% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 20.2% and 12.6% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 14.6%.
5. Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for August 2006, the indices for July 2006 have undergone the first revision and those for May 2006 have undergone the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for May 2006 and July 2006.
