Employment security is a measure of the stability of employment conditions in the marketplace, and clearly is desirable for workers in that country.

The longer the average working tenure is, and the lower the indicts of layoffs or redundancies are, the more employment security there is said to be in a company, industry or country.

Factors that influence employment security are:

  • a country’s national economy.
  •

  • international market conditions.
  •

  • competence and vocational skills of the individuals.
  •

  • nature and location of the industry.
  • In addition, jobs in government, healthcare and educational sectors are known to offer a higher level of employment security than private organizations.

Employment Security: How to Get It

The nature of modern employment means that there is international competition for jobs, so absolute job security cannot be achieved. Employees can improve their prospects, however, by:

    • Proving yourself as an indispensable employee is the best way to obtain employment security.
    • Excellent job performance, willingness to learn, trustworthiness, innovative ideas and a positive attitude are key indicators that help to prove an employee’s worth in any organization or in any competitive industry.
    • Demonstrating best practices in an industry that one is familiar with is a good way to gain respect in an organization.
    • Working in industries that indicate strong economic outlooks even in times of financial uncertainties ensures employment security. Examples of such industries include energy, health care, and manufacturers of plastics, rubber, metal fabrication and chemicals.

Employment Security: The Concept of ‘Flexicurity’

The International Labor Organization (ILO) promotes the concept of ‘flexicurity,’ which means flexibility and security for employees. The gist of this concept is that flexicurity is possible when there is a healthy, meaningful dialogue between the employees, employers and the government. Factors that promote “flexicurity” are:

    • re-employment assistance
    • providing monetary support
    • motivating employees to move upward in their organizations

Working in an industry that fits with an employee’s personality, values, passion, and skills ensures long term employment security.
