The employment department of a state is responsible for supporting the creation of job opportunities and assisting employers and job seekers in fulfilling their employment needs. While helping employers find suitable candidates, the employment department assists job seekers with searching for jobs, unemployment benefits and the protection of their rights.

Functions and Objectives of the Employment Department

Although the employment departments in different countries have varying regulations and domains, they have the single goal of improving the job environment. The employment department helps with:

  • Job search: The employment department conducts a thorough research and provides information on job fairs. One can register for employment on the department’s website, on which job listings are posted.
  •

  • Unemployment benefits: Unemployed citizens can claim benefits under the state’s unemployment benefit scheme. The benefit can also be reclaimed in case one loses a job shortly after recruitment. Employment departments of some states also offer the facility of depositing unemployment insurance benefits directly into one’s bank account.
  •

    • Training: One of the critical functions of the employment department is to create a skilled labor force. This is achieved through training and educating individuals for specific vocations.
    • Labor laws: The employment department oversees the implementation of labor laws and regulations. If required, it can intervene in disputes related to bonded or contractual labor. Trade unions, workers’ benefits and bonuses are also regulated by the department.
    • Veterans’ benefits: Certain employment benefits are granted to those who have served their country in the past. War veterans or the widow/widower of a veteran are given priority status by the employment department. They are also offered follow up and counseling services.
    • Registration of a new business: The employment department also provides assistance to those who plan to start their own business. The entrepreneur needs to fill in a form, supplemented by his business idea/plan. The department helps in providing statistical information, counseling, finding investors and even employees for the new business.
    • Child care: In certain states, the employment department helps in caring for the children of working parents, indirectly helping in the generation of revenues. For instance, in 2008, the Oregon employment department looked after 123,000 children. The revenues generated through childcare helped the state support 4,000 Oregon jobs.
