According to the US Census Bureau 2005, the estimated population of the state is 8,683,242 in comparison to 8,541,221 in July 2004. The net change in the population 2002-03 is 1.2%. According to the US Census 2000, the total population of the state was 8,049,313. The density of population is calculated at 172.6 per sq mi.

With regards to the Racial Distribution (2000): White 72.10%; Black 21.6%; Asian 1.4%; Native American 1.2%.

Business and Economy of North Carolina
According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the gross state product in 2003 was $314 billion with a Per Capita Personal Income of $28,071 in the same year.

The Chief Industries of the state are manufacturing, agriculture and tourism.

Important manufacturing goods of the state are food products, textiles, industrial machinery and equipment, electric and electronic equipment, furniture, tobacco products, and apparel.

Major crops are tobacco, cotton, soybean, corn, food grains, wheat, peanuts and sweet potatoes.Livestock (Jan 2004): 880,000 cattle/calves; (Jan 2003): 9.9 mil hogs/pigs; (Dec 2003): 17.5 mil. Chickens.

Apart from this the state owns the mineral products like feldspar, mica and lithium materials and substantial quantities of olivine, crushed granite, talc, clays and phosphates Rocks.
