The total population of the state as of July 2004 was 4,515,770 in comparison to 4,496,334 in July 2003. The net change in the population of the state 2002-03 was 0.4%.

The density of the population of the state is 103.2 per sq mi.

With regards to the Racial Distribution (2000): 63.9% white; 32.5% black; 1.2% Asian; 0.6% Native American.

The Gross State Product in the year 2003 for Louisiana was US$140 billion with a per capita personal income of US$26,312.

The Chief Industries of the state are Wholesale and retail trade, tourism, manufacturing, construction, transportation, communication, public utilities, finance, insurance, real estate and mining.

Important Manufacturing goods of the state are chemical products, foods, transportation equipment, electronic equipment, petroleum products, lumber, wood and paper.

Major Crops of the state are Soybeans, sugarcane, rice, corn, cotton, sweet potatoes, sorghum, and aquaculture. The climate of the state and rich alluvial soil make the state one of the nation’s leading producer of the sweet potatoes, rice and sugarcane.

Livestock of the state (Jan 2004): 850,000 cattle/calves; (Jan 2003): 20,000 hogs/pigs; 2.6 mil. Chickens.

Apart from this the state has also great mineral wealth. The state is a leading producer of the salt and sulfur.
