The low prices in the sugar industry have been a result of the gradual decline in real prices of sugar and related products. Producers of sugar in the USA have been able to bring down the prices of the sugar related products as they have been investing in technology that has assisted them in procuring increased output.
The sugar industry of the USA has been facing some challenges of late. One of the major crises that the US sugar industry finds itself in is the scarcity in the consumption of sugar and related products. The influx of overseas companies dealing in sugar and related products has increased in the recent times and the administration, which is presently in charge of the USA has not exactly been proactive regarding this.
The USA sugar industry is the fifth biggest of its kind in the world. It is also one of the four top net importers and consumers of sugar.
Globally 69 percent of the world’s sugar is generally consumed in the country of its origin and balance amount is traded among nations.
In twelve states in the northern half of the USA sugarbeets are cultivated and in four states in the southern half of the USA sugarcane is grown. This proves that the US sugar industry is pretty evenly divided. Recent Policy Changes in US Sugar Industry:
The proposed 2008 U.S. farm bill approved in the House and Senate includes various provisions applicable for US sugar producers. This includes allotment of 85 percent of US sugar market to American producers. It has also come up with policy frameworks to estimate total demand for sugar in the country. It will help in acquiring exact knowledge on total demand of the nation over a period.
