Coutts & Co Bank: History& Network

Coutts was originally known as Campbell’s bank and was formed by young Scot banker known as John Campbell in 1692. Based in Lundie, Scotland, John extended the business to Strand and London. He used the sign of ‘Three Crowns’ as the logo and ever since, it has become the logo of the bank. The bank’s headquarters are in Strand.

After the death of John Campbell in 1712, the bank was continued by his family members. Out of them, the most active was his son-in-law, George Middleton, who had in fact become Campbell’s partner in 1708. Though, he couldn’t do much to keep the bank growing. The bank suffered one blow after another and the Jacobite risings even threatened the very existence of the bank.

Stability returned only in 1735 when George Campbell, John’s son, became the main authority and renamed the bank ‘Bankers of 59 Strand’. The bank became ‘Campbell & Coutts’ in 1755 when Mary, John Campbell’s grand-daughter Mary married James Coutts. George made James a partner and he started running the business.[br]
