This staggering number represented an increase of 6.73 million from the previous year’s figure.

In 2008, China witnessed 16.08 million births with the birth rate reaching 12.14 per thousand. The total number of deaths was at 9.35 million and the death rate stood at 7.06 per thousand. The Chinese population grew by 5.08% with a sex ratio (at birth) of 120.56.

While estimating the extent of China’s population, all the provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities under the jurisdiction of the central government and the military were included. However, people residing in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative region and Taiwan Province were not a part of the survey.
