The biofuel companies are in the business of manufacturing environmentally friendly products like biodiesel, bioalcohol, vegetable oils and syngas. Solid biofuels like domestic excreta, dried animal manure, grass cuttings, and wood are manufactured by the end users themselves. Biodiesel is the most widely manufactured product among all biofuels. An overwhelming 80% of biofuel companies around the world commercially manufacture and retail biodiesel.

[br]Biodiesel is produced from oils or fats using transesterification chemical processes. The organic chemical is mixed with ethanol (or methanol) and sodium hydroxide to get the resultant biodiesel suitable for commercial use. The fuel produced can be used to fill up, and run any diesel engine. Biodiesel is usually mixed with conventional mineral diesel.

Biodiesel finds wide acceptance in Europe and North America. Companies like Carolina BioFuels LLC have their own manufacturing facility with capacity of producing more than 10 million gallons per year. Global biodiesel production reached approximately 4.5 million tons in 2007.

Bioalcohol fuels like ethanol and butanol are also commercially manufactured. Ethanol is a popular biofuel product. The product is used as a substitute for petrol (or gasoline). Gasoline users may also blend the organic product with the mineral fuel in any percentage. The standard fuel mix is 15% ethanol and 85% petrol.

[br]Companies like Anderson Inc. possess extensive grain catchment and processing facilities in the United States’ states of Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana. The Australian company ‘Australian Ethanol Limited’ manufacture and distribute ethanol in the continent.

Smaller companies manufacture vegetable oil to be used as fuel. The oil produced from vegetables are of lower quality and unsuitable for use in modern sophisticated automobile engines. Vegetable oil can be used to fill up older indirect injection system diesel engines in warmer climates. Automobile companies like Wartsila, Deutz AG, and MAN B&W Diesel sell engines that are compatible with vegetable oils.

Syngas is manufactured by a limited number of companies. The North American company Syngas Biofuels Energy, Inc commercially produces syngas by a combination of combustion, gasification, and pyrolysis. The manufactured inflammable gas can be used to run internal combustion engines. Syngas is also a precursor of synthetic petroleum- a mineral gasoline substitute.
