The Bank of Slovenia is the central bank of the Republic of Slovenia. The bank was established on June 25 1991 on the basis of the Law on the Bank of Slovenia, promulgated by the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia.

By the nature of its formation, the bank is a non-governmental independent institution. The primary objective of the bank is to ensure the stability of the domestic currency and the liquidity of payments within the country and with foreign countries. In the pursuance of its objectives the bank performs following functions:

The primary objective of the bank is to ensure the stability of the domestic currency and the liquidity of payments within the country and with foreign countries. In the pursuance of its objectives the bank performs following functions:

  • To act as the banker of banks and the lender of the last resort
  • Supervising the activities of the banking system in the country
  • Acting as the banker to the government
  • Acting as custodian and manager of the country’s foreign exchange reserves
  • Supervising the activities of the country’s banks and other financial institutions
  • Promoting credit and exchange conditions necessary for a healthy and balanced growth of the Slovenian economy

The bank conducts no corporate business and essentially none with natural persons.

The administration of the Bank of Slovenia is in the hands of a Governor and the Governing Board. The Governing Board consists of nine members – the Governor, four Vice-Governors and four members. The Governor is also the chairman of the Governing Board. The Governor approves one of the Vice-Governors to act as his deputy. The term of all the members of the board including the Governor is six years.
