According to the Second Advance Estimates of Production in Crops for 2005-06, the total food grains production is estimated at 209.32 million tonnes, which is 4.71 million tonnes more than the total food grains production of 204.61 million tonnes of 2004-05 (as per the Fourth Advance Estimates). While the production of Kharif food grains is estimated at 108.15 million tonnes, production of Rabi foodgrains is estimated at 101.17 million tonnes. Wheat productin is estimated at 73.06 million tonnes. Productin of Maize is estimated at 14.99 million tonnes, which is an all time record. The production of pulses during 2005-06 is estimated at 14.40 million tonnes and is higher by 7.6 percent compared to the production level of 2004-05.
The total oilseeds production in 2005-06 is estimated at 26.37 million tonnes, which is also marginally higher than the estimated total oilseeds production of 26.10 million tonnes in 2004-05. Production of sugarcan in 2005-06 is estimated at 266.88 million tonnes and higher by 15 percent vis-à-vis the production of 2004-05.
As reported by the States, total coverage under wheat, as on 27.2.2006 has been reported as 267.01 lakhs ha. Against 264.88 lakh ha. Reported for the corresponding period of last year. Higher coverage has been reported from the States of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal and Bihar. However, lower coverage has been reported in Madhya Pradesh. As for as area coverage for barley, Rabi Rice and total Rabi Coarse Cereals are concerned, these are also reported to be higher, as on 27.2.2006, as compared to levels recorded during the same period last year.
Integrated Nutrient Management for Kharif
Demand for major fertilizers namely Urea, DAP and MOP for Kharif, 2006 season has been assessed in consultation with the concerned State Governments, Department of Fertilizers, leading fertilizer suppliers and Fertilizer Association of India. The requirement of major fertilizers namely Urea, DAP and MOP for Kharif, 2006 season has been assessed at 122.38 lakh MTs, 33.10 lakh MTs and 14.66 lakh MTs respectively, which does not include pipeline requirements. Department of Fertilizers has assured adequate and timely supply of fertilizers as per assessment for Kharif, 2006 season.
