Review for the week ended 22nd April 2006

The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 1993-94 = 100) for the week ended 22nd April 2006 rose by 0.2 percent to 198.8 (Provisional) from 198.5 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 3.54 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 22/04/2006 (over 23/04/2005) as against 3.55 percent (Provisional) for the previous week and 5.96 percent during the corresponding week of the previous year.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

1. Primary Articles (Weight 22.02%)
The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 194.7 (Provisional) from 194.3 (Provisional) for the previous week. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-
The index for ‘Food Articles’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 197.3 (Provisional) from 196.7 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of eggs (11%), condiments & spices and wheat (2% each) and jowar, barley, bajra and gram (1% each). However, the prices of maize and arhar (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Non-Food Articles’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 176.5 (Provisional) from 176.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of copra (4%), linseed (3%), raw cotton (2%) and raw jute and castor seed (1% each). However, the prices of raw rubber (5%), cotton seed (3%), rape & mustard seed (2%) and safflower (kardi seed) and gingelly seed (1% each) moved up.

2. Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants (Weight 14.23%)
The index for this major group remained unchanged at its previous week’s level of 316.8 (Provisional).

3. Manufactured Products (Weight 63.75%)
The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 173.9 (Provisional) from 173.5 (Provisional) for the previous week. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Products’ group rose by 0.2 percent to 178.8 (Provisional) from 178.5 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of groundnut oil (2%) and rice bran oil, coconut oil and sugar (1% each). However, the prices of unblended black tea leaf gr (4%) and cotton seed oil (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Beverages Tobacco & Tobacco Products’ group rose marginally to 235.6 (Provisional) from 235.5 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of zerda (2%).

The index for ‘Textiles’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 130.3 (Provisional) from 130.5 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of hessian & sacking bags (4%) and hessian cloth and woollen yarn (1% each).

The index for ‘Chemicals & Chemical Products’ group rose by 0.8 percent to 191.5 (Provisional) from 190.0 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of toilet soap (12%), household laundry soap (10%), synthetic detergent (9%) and carbon black (2%). However, the prices of bopp film (3%) declined.

The index for ‘Non-Metallic Mineral Products’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 189.0 (Provisional) from 188.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of cement. However, the prices of building bricks (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Basic Metals Alloys & Metal Products’ group rose marginally to 218.1 (Provisional) from 218.0 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of zinc ingots (5%).

The index for ‘Machinery & Machine Tools’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 149.8 (Provisional) from 149.3 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of other cables (6%), sewing machines (5%), rubber insulated cables (4%), p.v.c. insulated cables (2%) and enamelled copper wires (1%).

FINAL INDEX FOR THE WEEK ENDED 25th February 2006
For the week ended 25/02/2006, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base:1993-94=100) stood at 196.8 as against 197.0 (Provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 4.18 percent as against 4.29 percent (Provisional) respectively reported earlier vide press note dated 10/03/2006.
