The Biden Administration is focusing on the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) industry. The Chief Executive Officers at top tech companies, such as Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, are set to meet with the US Vice President, Kamala Harris, and top administration officials to discuss issues in the AI industry.

White House sets a meeting to discuss AI issues

An official from the White House confirmed this meeting that is scheduled to take place on Thursday. An invitation seen by Reuters about the meeting and sent to the CEOs of some of the largest tech companies exploring AI noted concerns over the safety of these products that were not available to the public.

The invitation said that US President Joe Biden had an “expectation that companies like yours must make sure that their products are safe before making them available to the public.”

There are growing concerns over the growing popularity of AI technology. Some of these concerns include a violation of privacy, bias, and worries that this technology could trigger an increase in scams and be used to spread misinformation.

In April this year, President Biden had said that it remained to be seen whether AI technology posed any danger. However, the President noted that there was a need for technology companies to ensure that the products they release to the market were safe. Biden noted that past experiences have shown that powerful technology poses a danger and could cause harm if proper safeguards were not implemented.

The Biden administration has also been looking for public comments on the accountability measures for AI systems. The call for public comments comes amid growing concerns about the impact of AI on education and national security.

The White House also shows to be increasingly interested in this industry. Earlier this week, the deputies from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the White House Domestic Policy Council published a blog post on how technology could pose a danger to workers.

The meeting to which the tech CEOs have been invited will be attended by the White House Chief of Staff, Jeff Zients, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Bruce Reed, Director of the National Economic Council, Lael Brainard, National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, among others.

The growing popularity of AI technology

The AI industry has attracted much interest since the launch of the ChatGPT chatbot in November last year. ChatGPT is an AI program that attracted public attention because it can quickly generate answers to a wide range of questions.

ChatGPT has become the fastest-growing consumer application, given that it has hit over 100 million monthly active users in less than six months. The launch of ChatGPT has seen other tech giants rushing to launch their chatbots.

However, the rapid growth of the AI space has generated concerns with the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, urging people to be cautious with AI. Musk has also invited government supervision over the industry, saying that AI poses a danger to the public.
