As per latest information on US federal tax, federal taxes on cigarettes are supposed to go up by 62 cents. However, this hike has attracted ire of cigarette smokers as they are already pretty expensive throughout this nation. Many of them have raised an important question that this increase should also be implemented on USA federal taxes that are applicable for alcoholic goods.
This federal tax in US, to be imposed on tobacco products, would be put to effect from 1st of April 2009 onwards. This tax would be used to provide financial assistance to Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act. This federal tax of US has been backed by US President Barack Obama who has signed it so that it could be legalized.
It is also expected that as a result of this federal tax at US revenues worth $31.5 billion would be generated. However, this amount would be raised in coming four years. This money would go towards benefit of children who are not insured because their families are not capable of affording costs of Medicaid. Already prices of cigarette packs have been increased at a rate of 71 cents by manufacturers with an eye on offsetting aftereffects of this USA federal tax.
Spokespeople for cigarette makers in USA have reiterated that US federal tax is paid by companies themselves, which is why prices have been raised. However, this particular US federal tax is not an isolated move but has precedents also. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, state Senator of California, has already launched four bills that would reduce number of smokers in California. These bills are targeted mostly at teenage cigarette smokers in this American state.
This is known as Tobacco Tax and Health Protection Act of 2009. As per this US federal tax proposition there should be an increase of $1.50 in case of every pack of cigarette. At present cigarette packs are being taxed at a rate of 87 cents.
Nowadays it is being advised by financial experts to common tax payers that they should be filing their returns for US federal tax even if they do not pay them. This is because there are possibilities that they would ultimately need to pay money to tax authorities.
