At present this proposal of raising cigarette tax of Oregon is being considered by state legislators with great attention to details. Proposed rate of increase of this tax in Oregon is supposed to be 7 cents for every packet of cigarettes. This money would be used in state transportation sector as well. Main beneficiaries of this benefit of tax at Oregon are going to be people who are either physically or mentally disabled as well as senior citizens.

At present, 2 cents out of Oregon tax on cigarettes is donated to such areas. Last time that a increase was made on Ohio cigarette taxes, which stand presently at $1.18, was 20 years ago. Authorities who want these taxes to be raised have proposed that since these taxes do not generate sufficient funds it is feasible that they are upped as that would ensure handsome contributions to different areas of state income such as federal transit grants.

John Charles who acts as president of Cascade Policy Institute that is located at Portland has come up with a different angle on this raise of Oregon tax on cigarettes. He says that this tax increase is a self defeating step taken by local tax authorities as it would bring down number of people who smoke and that would mean that money generated from higher Oregon cigarette taxes would gradually become less.

Recent news on Oregon tax has revealed that a tax credit is coming way of tax payers in that state. It has been stated that this facility is supposed to be provided to all families earning in low and middle income bracket whereas ones earning in high income category would not be eligible to receive this benefit.

This facility known as Making Work Pay Credit has been initiated by US President Barack Obama. This benefit would be available to more than 1.3 million Oregon tax payers from 1st of April 2009 onwards. This sure is a great news for tax payers who have been hit hard by global financial downturn.
