Pennsylvania tax reports and statistics have confirmed that state generates a significant amount of money from PA tax imposed on cigarettes. In 2008 fiscal amount generated from Penn. tax on cigarettes was in excess of $1 billion.

When put into perspective against these statistics it is perhaps easy to understand hue and cry regarding increase of cigarette taxes by US President Barack Obama on 1st April 2009 and its effects on funds generated by cigarette tax of Pennsylvania.

It has been estimated by noted economic theoreticians that as a result of increase in cigarette tax in Pennsylvania smokers would be dissuaded from smoking them and this would affect sales of these products which in turn would affect tax at Pennsylvania imposed on cigarettes and revenue generated from it.

This increase in Pennsylvania tax imposed on cigarettes has found support from advocates of healthy living. They have said that this increase in rates of cigarette taxes is a good move as it would lead to a reduction in number of people smoking in that state.

This Pennsylvania tax increase on cigarettes is supposed to provide financial assistance to health insurance services that are provided to children in that state. However, these taxes have drawn ire of cigarette smokers in that state who have termed these as ridiculous.

This Pennsylvania tax increase on cigarettes would raise prices of packets by as much as $10 for every carton once these changes are made official. As it is, present prices of packs of cigarettes are in region of $17.50.

Property owners in this state are lending their support to Senator Richard Alloway II who has decided to do away with property taxes in that state. They are saying that this is a tax lacking in fairness and has been misappropriated to a significant extent. Pennsylvania tax taken on sales was initially supposed to provide financial support to public schools in state. They were also supposed to do away with property taxes imposed on schools in that state. However, they have not exactly lived up to its purpose. People have said that Act 1 that had been passed in 2006 was fraught with loopholes.
