The meaning of the concept “Economy” can be better identified only when that is scarce in nature. In the congruous manner the “Fuel Economy” concept is identified all over the world keeping in view its scarcity measure. Fuel Economy can be simply meant as the amount of fuel required by a vehicle to cover a given distance. In the same manner it can be defined as the distance traveled per unit of the fuel used.
Need Of The Fuel Economy
Most of the countries of the world rely upon the oils imported, which affect the respective country’s economy and the energy security.
Adoption of the Fuel Economy will
- Reduce the dependency upon others and will lead the vehicle makers to manufacture energy efficient vehicles.
- Increase the people’s participation for getting benefits
- Provide more information upon the vehicles while purchasing.
- Conserve the resources.
Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ)
Corporate Average Fuel Economy in the United States is a step to regulate and improve the fuel economy of the different types of vehicles. It can be defined as the average fuel economy expressed in terms of the miles per gallon.
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) controll the CAFE standards in the country.
The CAFÉ rules are changeable from the time to time. CAFE rules for trucks were amended to the end of March 2006.
From the analysis upon the fuel economy it is very clear that it reduces the oil consumption and the dependeny for the same. But how far the world has succeeded in achieving goals through this concept. It has brought partial success for the technologically advanced countries like US. Now the question may arise with regards to the emerging economies of the world particularly the developing nations. These countries lack technological advancement. So this fuel economy concept get fails to some extent for themselves.
Let us analyse the energy for which almost all the countries of the world are searching for. Most of the countries in the world are trying to rely upon the bio-diesels.
It is not the only country which have stepped forward for the bio diesels, even the United States and the UK are in a search for this. EU produced 2.4 million tons of bio-fuels in 2004. It has drawn the attention of the countries of the world to concentrate in this area.
The following steps are undertaken by some of the countries of the world.
- India’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) with US$500 million is to set up a biodiesel refining plant at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.
- Global energy major British Petroleum (BP) has announced to invest $9.4 millions in biodiesel production in India.
- In US, a $40 million biodiesel refinery will be built in Grays Harbor County, in western Washington State.
