Morgan Stanley Bank: History

The formation of Morgan Stanley Bank is associated with JPMorgan & Co. Once the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act was passed, no corporation could be involved in both investment banking and retail banking under one entity. While JPMorgan & Co stayed in the business of retail banking, some employees of the company joined some people from Drexel Partners. Hence, Morgan Stanley was formed and formally began its operations on September 16, 1935 on the Wall Street, New York City.

 

After playing a leading role in the distribution of debentures for the United States Steel Corporation in 1938 and in US rail financing in 1939, Morgan Stanley went through reorganization in 1941 to become more active in the securities business.

 

From 1951 to 1961, the company co-managed the World Bank’s triple-A-rated bonds under the leadership of founder Perry Hall. In 1962, Morgan Stanley started a new trend in financial analysis by creating the first viable computer model for this purpose. Since the late 1960s to the 1970s, Morgan Stanley expanded geographically and also started operating in the fields of real estate, sales and trading and private wealth management.
