Banca d’Italia or the National Bank of Italy is the central bank of Italian Republic. The bank is a part of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB). It was formed in 1893 as a result of the merger of four major banks in the country.

The bank has been functioning well in the fields of banking and financial supervision.

The bank is governed by the Shareholders, the Board of Directors, the Governor, the Director General, and two Deputy Director Generals.
The Board of Directors consists of the Governor and thirteen directors elected by General Meeting of Shareholders.

The Board of Directors is vested with administrative powers. Each member of the Board of Directors has a term of five years and can be reelected. The Governor heads the bank.

The general meeting is held annually with the purpose of approving accounts and appointing the auditors.
The Director General is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the bank.
