The Kerala bank sector operates three types of banks:

· Private banks: Major private players in the Kerala bank industry are ICICI bank, HDFC, Axis bank and The Karur Vysya Bank.

· Catholic Syrian Bank: This is a private sector bank with its head office at Thrissur. The bank was established in 1920. Catholic Syrian Bank has nearly 350 branches and extension counters. The number includes dedicated branches for non-resident Indians (NRIs), industrial finance and priority sector.
· Dhanalakshmi Bank: This bank is also headquartered at Thrissur. It has over 170 branches catering to customers in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The bank is a key player in forwarding micro credit finance to the Kerala-based priority sector.
· Federal Bank: With its head office at Aluva in Kerala, Federal Bank is a leading private sector bank. It specializes in modern banking products and services, customized to the financial needs of its customers.
· State Bank of Travancore: This is an associate of the State Bank Group. Also known as SBT, it is a premiere public sector bank in Kerala with over 560 branches.[br]
· The South Indian Bank: This is one of the largest private sector banks in Kerala. The bank has over 450 branches and nearly 50 extension counters spread across 19 states and union territories. The South Indian Bank undertook a major corporate makeover in 2006 to reflect its modern banking infrastructure and services.
