The Central Bank of Lesotho was initially started in the name of Lesotho Monetary Authority in the year 1978. The bank started its operations in the year 1980. Later, in 1982 the name was changed to Central Bank of Lesotho through an Act of the Parliament.

The bank is totally owned by the Government of Lesotho. The main objective of the bank is to maintain the price stability in the country.

  • Implementing the Foreign Exchange Policy
  • Managing the Foreign Exchange Reserves
  • Regulating the Capital Market
  • Smooth functioning of the financial sector of the country

The Governor, who is also the chairman of the Board of Directors, heads the Central Bank of the country. The Governor and two other Deputy Governors are appointed by the King on the advice of the country’s Prime Minister.
