The Bank Negara Malaysia is the central bank of Malaysia. The Bank was established on 26 January 1959, under the Central Bank of Malaya Ordinance, 1958.

 
Since then the bank has been operating with the following objectives:

  • Issuing the currency and maintaining the reserves
  • Acting as a banker and financial advisor to the Government
  • Maintaining monetary stability in the country
  • Ensuring sound financial structure
  • Improving overall economic performance

The Board of Directors of the bank is responsible for taking policy decisions. The Board consists of nine members – the Governor, the Deputy Governor, and the Secretary General. The other members (directors) are persons of eminence and experience in banking and economic affairs. The Governor is the chairman of the board. Members are appointed for a term of three years but are eligible for reappointment.
