Nanotechnology industry refers to a commercial field that earns revenue by commanding matter on a molecular or atomic scale. Common examples of nanotechnology in the commercial arena is use of silver in food packaging and zinc oxide in cosmetics and sunscreens.

Nanotechnology industry (or nanotech as it is popularly known) generates revenue by manipulating matter on a molecular and atomic level. The industry makes money by constructing devices and materials with size 100 nanometers or smaller. It is expected that nanotechnology will be widely applied in industries like electronics, energy production and medicine. The industry is, however, strictly regulated.

Industry scenario

The number of products produced by nanotechnology across the world numbers more than 1,000 at present. Most commercial applications are limited to passive nanomaterials like cosmetics and food products. The usage of titanium dioxide in personal products like sunscreen is made possible through material manipulation at the molecular level. The application of zinc oxide in paints, outdoor furniture varnishes and surface coatings is made possible only through commercial nanotechnological use.

Medical use

The nanotechnological industry is particularly conspicuous in the medical field. Nanoproducts are used as contrast agents in therapeutics for treating cancer and cell imaging. Medicinal nanotechnology is known as bionanotechnology and biomedical nanotechnology. The science is used is manufacture of drug delivery vehicles, diagnostic devices, physical therapy applications and analytical tools.

Nanotechnology also finds wide applications in chemical catalysis and filtration techniques. Materials with desired properties are engineered specifically for a particular application. Nano science is employed in the fabrication of photocatalytic devices and catalytic converters. The development of platinum nanoparticles for automotive catalytic converters is made possible through nanotechnology.
