Texas Economy – Social Indicators

Texas is situated in the S central part of the United States. The state is bordered by Oklahoma, across the Red R. except in the Texas panhandle; Arkansas; Louisiana, across the Sabine R.; the Gulf of Mexico; Mexico, across the Rio Grande R.; and New Mexico.

The state has a total geographical area of 268,581 sq mi; with a land area of 261,797 sq mi; and acres forested 17.1 million.

The total estimated population of the state as of 2005 is calculated at 22,859,968 compared to 22,490,022 in July 2004. Net change of the population in the state 2002-03 is 1.8%. According to the US Census 2000, the total population is 20,851,820. The population density is 84.5 per sq mi.

With regards to the Racial Distribution (2000): White 71.0%; Black 11.5%; Asian 2.7%; Native American 0.6%.

Business and Economy of Texas
The Gross State Product in Texas as of 2001 was $763.9 bil. The per capita personal income in the state (2003): $29,372.
Chief Industries are manufacturing, trade, oil and gas extraction and services.
Important manufacturing goods are industrial machinery and equipment, foods, electrical and electronic products, chemicals and allied products and apparel.
Major crops are cotton, grains (wheat), sorghum grain, vegetables, citrus and other fruits, green house/nursery, pecans and peanuts.
Livestock (Jan 2004): 13.9 mil cattle/calves; 1.1 million sheep/lambs; (Jan 2003): 930,000 hogs/pigs; (Dec 2003): 26.0 mil Chickens.
Apart from this the state is the main producer of helium, salt, sulfur, sodium sulfate, clays, gypsum, cement, and talc.

Electricity Production (est. 2003, kwh by source): Coal 92.9 bil; Petroleum 1 bil; Gas 35.6 bil; Hydro electric 796 mil; Nuclear 15.7 bil and Other 2 mil.
