Residents of Spain can get a credit card from their bank in which they hold an account. The same is applicable to non-resident home owners who have a bank account in the country. In Spain, credit card usage is not very popular since these cards are not quite flexible and are operated like a special bank account.[br]

At the month’s end, typically on 26th, the balance of the purchases made during the month is recorded. On the 6th of the subsequent month, the sum along with the applicable interest is debited from the cardholder’s current bank account. It is important to note that if cardholders wish to pay less, they must notify the bank before the 26th. Moreover, there should be enough funds in the bank so that the credit is met in full to avoid late fee. This should be done with in 10 days of the payment. If you are informing the bank by post, then it should be done well in advance.

Spain Credit Card: Information for Tourists

The most widely accepted credit cards in Spain are Visa and Masters. Tourists may use American Express or Diners cards as well. However, it is crucial that they know their Personal Identification Number to withdraw cash from ATMs in Spain. Tourists will not be able to use their credit cards for purchasing Euros at many currency exchanges or banks either. For withdrawing cash, you will have to use your debit card instead of a credit card. Moreover, under Spanish law you must prove your identity while paying by card.[br]

If you belong to a country that has currency other than the Euro and you want to pay by credit card, be cautious while paying at certain shops, hotels and restaurants. They may try to charge you in your country’s currency and by telling you that you will be saved a lot of hassle. You will not get the preferred rate of exchange. Actually, it will be worse than what a credit card company will offer. Your bank may treat it as a cash advance. In that case, you will be charged a daily interest, once you make the payment.

It is advisable to approach a credit card company that lets you do free transactions overseas without charging any commission on them, before you depart.
