Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently attended the UK’s AI Safety Summit, during which he sat down with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to talk about AI regulations.

The tech tycoon has spent years telling anyone who would listen that he sees AI as a danger to the future of humanity and that he recommends slowing down its development and heavy regulations that would guide those working on creating this technology. His concerns only grew with the rise of ChatGPT and other AI technologies over the past 12 months.

During the interview, Sunak and Musk spoke about the recent developments in the AI sector, as well as about possibilities regarding future developments and regulations. They also entered a philosophical debate regarding AI, specifically on what it means for people on both ethical and social levels.

Sunak pointed out that recent studies have found that the public feels anxiety when it comes to AI technology, specifically when it comes to potential job losses, as artificial intelligence continues to find more use cases, thus replacing workers and performing their jobs faster, more accurately, and being a much cheaper option for the employers.

Musk sees potential in AI, but recommends caution

Musk, who has his own concerns regarding AI, agreed that there is a strong need for regulation that would keep the industry in check. He noted that AI holds unsettling potential, especially after the recent breakthroughs. “We are seeing the most disruptive force in history here. There will come a point where no job is needed – you can have a job if you want one for personal satisfaction, but AI will do everything. I don’t know if that makes people comfortable or uncomfortable,” he said.

Commenting further, Musk noted that artificial intelligence has its positive sides, such as the ability to support the younger generations in their learning. He called it the best and most patient tutor, as AI has the potential to find the best possible way to teach and provide explanations without being impatient or feeling frustrated, even if the students struggle with understanding any specific concept.

The interview took place in Lancaster House, and the UK PM introduced Musk as a “brilliant and innovative technologist.” Their audience consisted of a number of tech executives, reporters, policy officials, and also a famous rapper, will.i.am.

The interview also revealed the British Prime Minister’s interest in AI technologies and recent developments, as well as his intention to keep the UK among the top global tech hubs in terms of innovation and regulation.
