UK shoppers were affected by a payment issue caused by a disruption from Worldline. A system breakdown stopped them from using their Visa and Mastercard for online and card transactions. Shoppers at big stores like M&S, ASDA, and Sainsbury’s were frustrated as they couldn’t buy groceries. According to DownDetector records, there were hundreds of complaints from these unhappy customers.

Sainsbury’s spokesperson said the problem was caused by an issue with their outside payment provider. The firm said all types of payments are now being accepted as usual and is keeping a close watch on the situation. The company apologized for all the inconveniences this may have caused its customers.

Consumers Face Payment Issues In Central London

Consumers experienced payment problems in central London retailers at 8:00 am on Thursday. Many reported difficulties completing transactions, but these reports decreased as the day progressed.

According to a Visa representative, they were notified about issues that a merchant payment provider had reported, impacting a number of cardholders earlier in the day. The spokesperson assured that the problem had been addressed and that Visa’s systems would remain fully functional.

Mastercard reported that it was aware of payment transaction issues at selected merchants in the UK. The team at Mastercard said they are cooperating with their partners to obtain more information. They also clarified that there is no indication that these issues are related to their network.

The outage was traced back to a service disruption at Worldline. Later, a Mastercard spokesperson confirmed that their network was running smoothly and that the issues encountered the day before were not from their systems.

Andrew Martin Highlighted The Dangers Of Relying Entirely On Cashless Payments

The Chief Executive Officer and Founder of SMEB, Andrew Martin, pointed out the danger of entirely depending on cashless payments. He mentioned that the recent payment outages stressed the lasting need for cash and showed why advancing toward a cashless society is not a good idea.

He stated further that in the UK, an increasing number of businesses are promoting themselves as ‘cashless’ locations. This has brought curiosity to how these businesses handle situations when technical issues arise and the inconvenience this can bring to their customers.

Mastercard is a worldwide payment solution provider that manages the world’s second-largest payment network. It helps transactions between businesses, consumers, banks, and governments in more than 210 countries and regions.
