Real estate mogul, and star of the reality television show ‘The Apprentice”, Donald Trump told the media on Friday that he was once again considering a bid to become the next president of the United States, after ruling himself out of the race just a couple of months ago.
In an interview with CNBC, Trump admitted that he was giving the decision “very, very serious thought”, especially since, “there are so many people wanting me to do it.”
The president of Trump Organisation also stated that he would be more inclined to run for the White House if the US economy “continues to be bad” and “if the Republicans pick the wrong candidate.”
According to The Daily Mail, Trump came out top of some polls for potential Republican candidates earlier in the year when he had first announced his intentions to run for the presidency.
Just as he did on he previous occasion, Trump once again blamed the problems of the US economy on “foolish leaders” who allowed other countries — namely China and the members of OPEC — to steal jobs and keep oil prices up.
”People don’t respect us any longer, they don’t respect our leaders. With all these foreign countries taking advantage of the U.S., unless somebody addresses that problem we’re never going to be great again,” said Trump.
Weighing on the debt ceiling debate, Trump told CNBC that Republicans now had the opportunity to “negotiate a great, great deal, but they can’t be weak.”
However, Trump also made it clear that a default by the US should only be in a worst-case scenario.
”I don’t advocate default,” he said. “What I do say is you can’t be afraid [of a default]. This is the time to settle the problems of years and years of abuse. This is the time for the Republicans to get the country back on track. The Republicans have the cards, the president does not have the cards.”
The 64-year-old real estate tycoon ruled himself out of the presidential race in May this year after stating that he was “not ready to leave the private sector.”
However, in his announcement at the time, Trump also expressed his strong belief that he would have had a fighting chance for the white house given the opportunity to run.
“I maintain the strong conviction that if I were to run, I would be able to win the primary and ultimately, the general election,” he wrote.
