Last week, Tesla announced that it had released its highly-anticipated Cybertruck. The vehicle was part of the production line for the electric vehicle (EV) maker in its Texas factory. The launch of this futuristic truck comes amid years of excitement regarding the model.
Tesla builds its first Cybertruck
The CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, first launched the Cybertruck in 2019. However, the production of this vehicle has been delayed severally. The production and delivery of this truck was initially slated for 2021. However, Tesla has since postponed the release because of a shortage in sourcing components.
In July last year, Musk said that the production schedule for the truck had since been revised to the summer of 2023. During the first quarter 2023 earnings call for Tesla, the executive promised to host a delivery event for the Cybertruck towards the end of the third quarter.
Tesla has previously attributed the delays in the production of this Cybertruck to issues with the supply chain. The leaked documents have shown some fundamental flaws in the basic design of the vehicle and engineering.
In January last year, 100 GB of files related to the production of the model were leaked to Handelsblatt. The leaked documents showed that there were issues with braking, suspension, sealing, powertrain, and structure.
During the 2023 annual shareholder meeting held in May, Musk had said that the EV maker could manufacture between 250,000 and 500,000 units annually after the production starts. The mass production of these units is slated to commence towards the end of the year.
The Cybertruck has attracted much interest
The futuristic pickup truck has attracted much attention in the vehicle industry. As of November 2022, this cybertruck had more than 1.5 million reservations, per a report by Electrek. The customers at Tesla can place a $100 refundable deposit to pre-order the truck.
Tesla had originally said that the price of this truck would commence at $39,900 for a single motor and rear-wheel drive model, with the towing capacity coming to 7,500 pounds and over 250 miles of range. The most expensive version of this truck will start at around $70,000, with three electric motors and all-wheel drive. The model will have a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds.
Tesla regularly revises its prices, with the values of these cybertrucks being prone to change before the end of the current year. Buyers might also be eligible for $7,500 worth of federal EV tax incentives.
The launch of the Tesla pickup truck will result in the automaker having another profitable EV segment across the US. This model will compete with other EV pickup trucks by Ford. The Ford F-150 Lightning truck has a starting price of around $60,000.
Other automakers like Chevrolet and Rivian are also focused on releasing EV-powered pickup trucks. Chevrolet will start delivering its EV truck in the fall of 2023, while Rivian will start deliveries this summer.
