The South Korean electronics giant released a statement paying tribute to the former Apple CEO, describing him as a “great entrepreneur” whose “innovative spirit” will be remembered forever.

“His innovative spirit and remarkable accomplishments will forever be remembered by people around the world,” said Samsung’s chief executive and vice chairman Choi Gee-sung, as quoted by AFP. “”Chairman Steve Jobs introduced numerous revolutionary changes to the information technology industry and was a great entrepreneur.”

Choi added that the company was  “saddened” by Jobs’ death, which has shaken the tech industry. Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, were among other Jobs’ rivals who paid homage to the former Apple CEO, while US President Barack Obama issued a statement, calling Jobs “among the greatest of American innovators.”

Samsung is the world’s second largest mobile phone maker, and has been embroiled in a bitter battle with Apple over their respective smartphones and tablet designs. On Wednesday, the South Korean company sent out emails comparing its Galaxy S II smartphone with the newly announced iPhone 4S while announcing plans to file preliminary injunction motions against its rival’s device in France and Italy.

The two companies remain locked in worldwide legal battles that has expanded to numerous tech companies.
