On Thursday, reports of a major hack affecting Trust Wallet, a popular multi-currency crypto wallet, spread rapidly across social media. Blockchain security influencer ZachXBT revealed that hundreds of users had their wallets drained, with over $6 million reportedly stolen in SOL, EVM tokens, and BTC. This news has raised serious concerns about wallet security and shaken investor confidence in the crypto market.

Over $6 Million Stolen from Users

As we mentioned, ZachXBT initially reported several victims, but later confirmed that the number had risen into the hundreds. The stolen funds came from users who had interacted with the Trust Wallet browser extension, suggesting that the hack may have targeted the latest December 24 update.

According to social media reports, the theft appears linked to a potential supply chain attack. User Akinator noted that the update may have included hidden code that silently tracks wallet activity and sends data externally under the guise of analytics. This code could trigger when a seed phrase is imported, allowing hackers to drain wallets.

Investigation and Safety Measures

In fact, security researcher Vladimir S. advised users with the Trust Wallet extension on their computers to disconnect from the internet immediately to minimize further damage. He also mentioned contacting a Trust Wallet team member anonymously, who is investigating the incident and will release updates soon.

Although Trust Wallet has not officially responded, ZachXBT expressed hope that the platform will compensate affected users if it is found responsible.

Impact on Investor Confidence

Consequently, this incident has negatively impacted overall crypto sentiment. Retail investors are likely to become more cautious, reduce on-chain activity, and delay new investments. Trust in browser-based wallets and recent updates may also face short-term erosion.

Moreover, the hack reinforces the risks of storing crypto in online wallets, particularly when recent updates or extensions may contain vulnerabilities. As a result, investors are reminded to remain vigilant, secure their seed phrases, and consider additional security measures to protect their assets.
