Elon Musk: Do You Need a Tesla Supercharger? Vote

Tesla announced it is asking the public for help deciding where to place its next superchargers. The company is working to build up its network of EV fast-charging stations across North America, Europe, and Asia. In light of its increasing network expansion, Tesla stated that it would let users vote on the locations of superchargers.

Supercharger Network

When it comes to fast-charging networks, the Supercharger network is the industry benchmark. It has helped Tesla achieve remarkable market share in the EV market in both the US and Canada. The manufacturer currently runs the largest fast-charging network in the world.

Since Tesla wants to add EVs from other automakers to its charging network, there should be a significant increase in demand for the network in the coming months.

According to a recent Electrek report, Tesla is expanding its supercharging design team in Canada to speed up the installation of additional stations. In the US, Tesla is seeking places for more stations, and the situation is similar.

Vote on Tesla Supercharger Locations

The online vote comes as Tesla plans to open up its Supercharger network to other electric vehicles by the end of the year. The expansion may assist Tesla in luring more customers while increasing the use and revenue from the Supercharger initiative. Additionally, it may put much pressure on the network, especially in states like California, where more Teslas and other EVs are on the road.

Tesla has revealed that users will be able to vote on supercharger sites beginning in 2019, creating a poll where people may vote on new locations’ responses to the tweet. There are still certain areas where a supercharger station would be highly beneficial, even if Tesla’s supercharger network has already reached the majority of the population in North America.

The responses that have received the most likes mention British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, Alaska, and Hawaii. Responses indicated a significant demand for US National Parks, where tourists frequently travel.

Tesla Receives Funding to Construct Four Massive Superchargers

The public charging networks will expand as electric vehicle adoption rises, thanks to new legislation and funding ideas. The California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program Rural Electric Vehicle Charging Program, also known as GFO-21-604, is one such funding scheme.

The program aims to increase access to charging stations for those living in remote areas. In total, 28 projects were submitted to the CEC, and 17 obtained financing. Tesla made four similar requests, and each one received funding. It is a substantial investment, with a capital of $1.6M per project.

Tesla received approval for a range of projects, including a 164-stall Supercharger hub along the I-5 corridor and a 56-stall extension on the route to Vegas. Three of the four sites combined will surpass the record set by the largest Supercharger in the world, situated in Coalinga, California.

Most significantly, a minimum of 50% of connections must meet CCS standards for a grant to be approved. Since there are presently just Tesla-standard outlets on Superchargers in North America, Tesla will likely be putting a CCS adaptor at every stall, a project we have previously covered termed the Magic Dock.
