MetaTrader 5 (MT5) finally officially surpassed the older MetaTrader 4 (MT4) in terms of trading volume, making it the second-best for the first time in 15 years.

This is a major milestone and achievement for MT5, which accounted for 54.2% of the total combined trade volume that went through the two versions. MT4 held the remaining 45.8% share, and while many had expected this to happen this year, these figures have still exceeded expectations.

This suggests that MT5 is growing even more popular than expected, as its momentum among users is blowing up.

What Made MT4 So Popular And Why Is It Now Losing Market Share?

MT4 was launched 20 years ago, in 2005. Ever since, it has been the go-to platform for CFD trading, reigning as a superior and unable to be beaten by those before or after it, until now. Its popularity, which held true for two decades, comes from a variety of factors, including a user-friendly design, a major ecosystem of third-party tools, as well as dependable performance.

For years, traders praised its charting features, the abundance of educational resoutces, and algorithmic trading capabilities via Expert Advisors. Brokers also preferred it to any alternative due to its easy integration and broad client familiarity.

All of these advantages allowed it to become and stay the industry leader for a long time. However, MetaTrader 5 has been growing in popularity and slowly claiming more and more of the market share for itself. It comes with technological upgrades, evolving regulatory standards, and a growing demand for more diverse trading instruments.

Brokers started pushing it as part of their efforts to modernize their offerings and services, and the developer behind both platforms started encouraging users to switch to MT5 by providing more support for it, while scaling back support for MT4.

In other words, this was bound to happen eventually, as the growing adoption of MT5 signaled it for a long time now. Even so, many who used MT4 for years see this as the end of an era, and a turning point in the long-standing rivalry between the two platforms.
