Nomura has announced a major leadership change, as John Tierney is set to become the Chief Executive Officer of Nomura Europe Holdings and Nomura International. This shift marks the end of Jonathan Lewis’s 10 years in the role.
Lewis, who became Chief Executive Officer in December 2014, reportedly played a key role in guiding Nomura through difficult times. These challenges included Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a wave of regulatory changes in the financial sector.
Nomura Aims For Stable European Growth With Tierney’s Leadership Transition
Although Lewis will no longer be Chief Executive Officer, Nomura shared that he will stay active in the company. He will take on non-executive roles and lead some company boards, including Nomura Financial Products Europe and Instinet Europe.
Kentaro Okuda, Nomura’s President and Group Chief Executive Officer, said Lewis’s leadership was key in guiding the company through many challenges. Okuda added that Lewis had helped Nomura manage Brexit, handle the effects of COVID-19, and bring in many new rules that affected the business.
Nomura now looks to John Tierney, who was Chief Operating Officer of NEHS, to lead. The company explained that Tierney has been with Nomura for 26 years, gaining a lot of experience in the European part of the company and in Asia outside Japan.
In the past, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Nomura Bank International and as the Chief Financial Officer for EMEA.
Nomura stated that Tierney’s promotion comes at an important time. European markets now have more strict rules, and they face growing challenges, so Nomura needs strong and steady leadership.
Nomura Aims To Tackle New Challenges In Europe With Tierney’s Leadership
With Tierney’s many years of experience in finance and his role on the NEHS executive team, the company said that his appointment shows Nomura’s plan for stable growth in Europe.
Toshiyasu Iiyama, Nomura’s Deputy President, said that Tierney knows the company well, so he will be a good leader. He also said that Tierney’s good leadership will help Nomura grow. Iiyama added that Tierney’s past work will help him lead Nomura through new features that come up.
Nomura said that Tierney will have to help with problems like Brexit and changes in European markets. The company thinks Tierney will help Nomura a lot, building on what Lewis did as Chief Executive Officer.
Nomura is sure that with Tierney in charge, the future for the European part of the company will be bright. The company believes his skills and knowledge will help both Nomura and the finance world.
