Intel Corp has shared a few details about its artificial intelligence (AI) computing that it plans to release in 2025. The company is shifting its operational strategy as it competes against Nvidia Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
Intel shares insight into future AI chips
The company held a supercomputing conference in Germany on Monday. During the conference, the company said that its “Falcon Shores” chip that will be launched soon will contain 288 gigabytes of memory. It will also support 8-bit floatation point computation.
The announcement comes when competition in the AI industry has intensified. Providing technical specifications of any AI product that will be released to the market is needed because AI models have become increasingly popular in the market. These products have exploded in size, and businesses are now searching for powerful chips that will run these systems.
Intel faces intense competition in the industry
The details shared by Intel on the matter are among the initial details that have become available in the market as the company shifts its strategy to become more competitive against Nvidia. Nvidia is currently taking the lead in manufacturing chips for the AI market. However, Nvidia will have to compete against the M1300 chip created by AMD, which could threaten its leadership position in the AI chip industry.
On the other hand, Intel does not have a significant market share in the AI space. The company had planned to overtake Nvidia through a competing chip known as Ponte Vecchio. However, the chip failed to become a success after many years of delay.
On Monday, Intel said that it had finalized the shipments for the Aurora supercomputer that relies upon the Ponte Vecchio chip. According to Intel, this chip offers better performance compared to the latest AI chip created by Nvidia, known as the H100. The Falcon Shores follow-up chip that is set to be released by Nvidia will not be available in the market until 2025. By that time, Nvidia will have already released its own chip.
The corporate vice president of the super compute group at Intel, Jeff McVeigh, said that the firm was taking its time to add modifications to this chip after abandoning its past strategy to combine graphics processing units (GPUs) with the central processing units (CPUs).
While speaking to Reuters, the executive said the company aspired to create the best CPU and GPU in the market. As such, it was impossible to determine that there was a single vendor in the market that would have the best combination of these features. Moreover, the company was focused on discrete offerings to determine the ratio and the vendors.
As Intel works hard on releasing a new chip to the market, the AI industry continues to report significant growth. Tech giants continue seeking ways to emerge as top players in the industry. The founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, believes that a top AI agent could replace search engines and streamline the online shopping experience.
