Roberto Politano, the Chief Marketing Officer at Innovative Finance, recently spoke about the state of the UK fintech. In a recent interview at FMLS:24, Politano pointed out that the UK’s fintech sector is the leader in terms of capital investment in Europe, while it is second only to the US sector on a global level.
He also added that the UK received $2 billion in investments in fintech during the first half of 2024, which is more than all European countries combined.
Looking ahead, he noted that the situation in 2025 is still uncertain, even though the state of the UK fintech is in a very good place right now. Politano said that things could change slightly, but it is simply too early to know for certain.
The UK’s Fintech Sector Is Growing
The UK has seen a massive fintech revolution over the years, becoming the home to some of the world’s biggest fintech giants, such as Wise and Revolut. Revolut specifically is the highest-valued fintech in Europe, boasting a valuation of $45 billion. Not only that, but the company is in pursuit of a banking license in the UK.
Speaking on the state of fintech firms, he said that there is nothing stopping founders from starting innovative firms and projects, but he stressed that they must ensure their presence in key markets that they wish to tap.
He pointed out that the US is one of the largest markets, if not the largest market for fintech. With that said, he believes it would be good for founders to have a presence in that market if they wish to enter it and grow in it.
So far, Politano has been with Innovative Finance for nearly three years, initially joining as the Director of Marketing and Public Relations. After a while, he became the company’s Chief Marketing Officer. However, his experience in marketing itself is much longer, as he started working in marketing-oriented roles 20 years ago, in 2004.
When asked what advice he would offer to aspiring fintech founders who wish to gain traction, he said that they should strive to be unique in their propositions. Other than that, they must do their research before launching a new product or service. They should also connect with other players in the targeted market, and not be siloed too much into their own organizations.
Innovative Finance’s Role In The UK
Innovative Finance itself is a fintech body in the UK whose goal is to speed up the nation’s role in the financial services sector. The organization has been trying to achieve this goal by directly supporting the next generation of technology-led innovators.
Politano commented on this as well, stating that Innovative Finance seeks to establish itself as the voice of UK Fintech — one that will support its success stories and make them heard.
“We work with the government and regulators to make sure that regulations are helping fintechs to start, scale, and grow in the country,” he added. So far, he found the UK government’s approach to fintech as very positive, even claiming that the government has embedded some of the recommendations that the firm has provided regarding the future plans for growth.
